  2. For 80s style drums i recommend the following:
    1) Parallel compressed drums, for the big snappy snare sounds.
    2) Reverb (Plate or Gated...a good dosage of it!
    3) for the Phil Collins drum sound, get this! http://www.solid-state-logic.com/Music/LMC-1/index.asp. It works!

Well, thats what i do anyway....my 2 cents worth...

  4. Dan, I actually haven't had the luxury to do parallel compression for a while now when I mix bands live.

    1. Because I've always been pressured for time to line check the band and GO! These bands don't get the luxury of a proper soundcheck unfortunately.

    2. When I work on digital desks, I can do so much on each channel that I didn't see the need for parallel comps anymore.

Parellel comps to me, surfaced due to two reasons too.
    1. sometimes coz there arent enough comps for each drum, so you comp the entire kit.
    2. obviously, this became favourable and has become a "trick" hehe. Nice right parellel comps? hehehe.

I wonder if I'd have time to do it tomorrow when I mix the headliners. hehe. Will let you know how it goes.

  5. my fav drum sounds are that of Pendulum. Yeah it is drum and bass and uses loads of layered samples, but when they play live, their drum sound still sounds AMAZING!. Im sure they use triggered sounds to layer ontop of their live kit as well. Innerpartysystem's drum also sound amazing.

will probably look at layering drum samples on top of each other the next time i do a track.

I read somewhere that layering the standard 808 kick ontop of an acoustic drum kick adds something to the kick. Also layering a gated clap sound from a drum module on top of a snare also adds something. hmmmm....

I could go on about this for hours....but i'd stop.....

  6. Yeah, layering claps over snares are very effective and layering sub sounds for the kick gives it a bit of a depth and boost in the low end, there are boundless possibilities bro!
